No matter how much I love dollar pizza, a good breakfast it does not make.
2 Bros. - 38th St and 6th Ave

Everyone has their spot. Mine used to be 6th Ave Pizza, on 38th and 6th. It rested perfected between my walk from the office to Port Authority. Mitra and Patel have some savory pizza. Their rustic tomato sauce with hints of coriander and an always lightly toasted layer of cheese never dissapoints.

But on this same block, new spots emerged: a new place opened on 39th and 6th; a few months later, a 2 Bros. opened up next to 6th Ave Pizza. 6th Ave in Midtown West had become the new Dollar Pizza District.

Since 6th Ave Pizza had become my regular spot, I thought I owed it to Mitra and Patel to review their new neighbors, whose price compeition has ignited a rivalry between the two stores. Over the course of a few weeks, I have indulged myself in multiple slices from the 2 Bros. at the southwestern corner of 6th Ave and 38th Street.

Ratings

Crust:3/5

Cheese: 2/5

Sauce: 4/5

Condiments/Napkins: 3/5

Overall: 3/5

Crust was chewy, sometimes a delightful eggy-sweet bread, other times, it tastes too yolky and undercooked. Likewise, the cheese was often undercooked (I prefer a certain shade of brown to my cheese after baking). In addition, slices were especially floppy and difficult to fold. Sauce was consitently sweet and tangy—easily the best part about this slice. Napkins are never handed out with the slice which is always an automatic point deduction. Also, in order to get a 5/5 in the condiments category, a pizza place must also have hot sauce, which 2 Bros. does not. Garlic salt and black pepper shakers are cleverly taped over to prevent overpour. The crushed red pepper dispenser contained too large of a hole one time, and gobs of red pepper waterfalled onto my floppy slice, failing to meld with the greasy cheap cheese.

Not recommended.

You are better off going to the one on 38th and 8th Ave if possible.

Wah soda?

Depends on the mood. Usually cherry coke. Sometimes pink lemonade, and on the occasion, a diet dr. depper.

Thanks for the Q.

James E. Davis started talking to me in the middle of my second slice. Rarely do I buy a second slice immediately after my first, but this pie was especially good.
The crust: thin and crispy toward the tip of the slice and delightfully chewy towards the end but overall did not taste too bready or yolky. The sauce had a sweet tinge and a watery subtexture, which melded nicely with the thin layer of cheese.
James agreed, “Good pizza, huh?”
This is how he started his conversation with me.
“Yep,” I responded, happy to make a new friend.
“You like dollar pizza?” James conjectured.
He could see it in my eyes.
“You heard of 711?” James continued.
“Yep.”
Unbeknownst to James, I had actually just discovered a 711 6 blocks from my office. I think I know where my next slice is coming from. Thanks James.

The Dollar Pizza Review System

2 Bros. - St. Marks

Shortly, this site will begin visiting locations and providing official reviews for the various dollar pizza spots across our great city. Guest poster Touching You opined to me personally that pizza is not that hard to make/difficult to mess up—all it takes is cheese and sauce. Well TY, you couldn’t be any farther from the truth, because to make a great dollar slice requires ingenuity, the right mix of ingredients, and a particular focus on the cooking process.

There are a million different types of dollar slices: the Chucky Cheese, the soupy slice, and the crispy one. The weird flavored one. The one where they don’t give you napkins. The one where  your fingers get covered in crust dust.

Yet,  we should also remember: THIS IS JUST DOLLAR PIZZA. What should it provide? Sustenance and flavor while on the run. Cheap, easy, and you shouldn’t regret it. Nothing is worse than spending a hard-earned buck on a slice that disappoints.

So we’ll start doing some reviews here, so you know where to pick up your slice and not be let down.

The Review Paramaters will be set on a sliding scale from 1 to 5, 5 being the highest. Parameters will include the following:

  • Crust: ?/5
  • Cheese: ?/5
  • Sauce: ?/5
  • Condiments/Napkins: ?/5

Each rated parameter will be accompanied by explanations within the text of the review, so you know the scores are not arbitrary. Evidence will be provided for our value judgments. Once each place is reviewed, a link to the review will be included in our “where to find Dollar Pizza” section.
